Walberswick Car Park Company

The eighth year of the Company operating the car parks in Walberswick closed on the 30th of September after another successful and highly satisfactory season. The accounts for the season are in the process of being audited by the Company Accountant. Preliminary results show that, after all expenses, a profit of some £16,000 will be covenanted to the Walberswick Common Lands Charity together with a rent of £4,000. The figure is marginally down on last year entirely due to the indifferent weather during the summer.
We employed over a dozen local people during the season and sold over 32,000 tickets. During the winter months repair and clearance work will have to be put in hand on Cliff Field, parts of which were badly eroded in the wet conditions, and some maintenance carried out on the Ferry Road sites.
The Directors of the Company are currently Ben Cardwell, Mary Clayton, Alvin Hunt, Rae Leighton, David Webb and Michael Vaughan. The Company Secretary is Angela Vaughan and Robin Buncombe is the Operations Manager.

POPPY APPEAL 2004

I would like to express my thanks to all those who gave their support, or gave so generously in order to raise money for the Poppy Appeal. Again there was a slight increase over previous years, a total of £2217 collected, which will go towards helping ex-Service men and women and their dependants, country wide. I would also like to thank my Committee again for being so supportive throughout the year.

FUTURE OF THE BRANCH

Readers may have read my notice in the November issue of the Village News.  As promised, the subject was raised at the AGM on 22nd November. The Chairman repeated, and then amplified what he had written in the Village News stating in précis that, unless new blood could be found by the middle of next year to replace those who had decided to stand down in November 2005, the current Committee would have to seriously consider closing or amalgamating the Branch with another, rather than allowing it to "wither on the vine".  As last month, if you think that you can help, or have any suggestions, please telephone me. There will be vacancies for a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and two Members.

WI: LIFE IN BUCKINGHAM PALACE

The first meeting of 2005 is on 12th January at 2.30 p.m. and we are very much looking forward to a tour of Buckingham Palace seen in the eyes of Mr Thompson. We should be delighted to welcome visitors and new members.
Our new President, Jenny Cardwell, welcomed twenty-five members and guests to a Christmas Party with wine. Vivien Finnie entertained us with some lovely piano playing and, after a few games, we all ate far too much delicious food,
and went away with a doggy bag to enjoy at home.

Climate Change

The 6th Annual Walberswick Discussion/ Debate will be held on Friday, 4th February at 8 p.m. in the Village Hall.
The idea behind these evenings is that we select a subject of national significance, for which there may be no agreed solution, and discuss it from a non-political standpoint. There can be no topic that fits this bill better than Global Warming, Climate Change and the very serious impact that such a change would have on East Anglia, and on us in Walberswick in particular.
We are very fortunate indeed that John Gummer, who is an international authority on this subject, has agreed to speak to us and to lead the discussion. John will speak for about 30 minutes, after which the discussion will be open to all.
I have asked him to assume zero knowledge on our part and to start at the beginning. What are 'green-house' gases? From where do they come? Who makes them? Why do they bring about change to the climate? What are the consequences of such change? Phew! That should be quite enough for one evening!
These discussions are open to all and free of charge. We will end at about 9.30 p.m. with a glass, or so, of wine.

Cancer Research U.K.

The Mini-Market in aid of Cancer Research U.K. organised on 4th December by Margaret Adkinson raised the magnificent sum of £2000.
We are very grateful to all our helpers and supporters for their hard work and generosity.
During the proceedings, the Area Secretary of Cancer Research U.K. made a presentation to Margaret in appreciation of her efforts for more than fifteen years, which have raised well over £20,000.
