Parish Council Meeting, March '05
PLANNING No objection: Erection of a single-storey rear extension forming bedroom and w.c./ shower for disabled parent together with utility room and w.c. at Wayfaring, Palmers Lane. Opposed: Erection of building to provide various facilities and ticket sales on land at The Harbour (Southwold side). Withdrawn: Application to build a pair of semi-detached houses at the Studio, Stocks Lane. RECYCLING - SCDC had responded to the Council's concerns about the new bins by stating that the expansion of their services had been publicised through direct information to every District and Parish Council, as well as to every resident via a number of publications. SCDC are obliged to reach EU standards on recycling and therefore committed to doing whatever is possible. Since the last meeting there had been some support for the bins, however, the question of recycling facilities for the village was once again discussed and it was agreed to place it on the agenda for the APM. METAL DETECTING - Reportedly, holes are being left in the ground by people using metal detectors in the area of Cliff Field and between the white bridge and the beach (near the campsite). If you are participating in this pastime please fill in the holes afterwards, as this is obviously dangerous to walkers. Walkers beware!
Vivien Hunt, Clerk to Council
Annual Parish Meeting
This takes place on Thursday 21st April at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall. The Chairman will give his report on the activities of the Parish Council throughout the year. Reports will also be given by the Common Lands Charity Trust, County and District Councillor Rae Leighton, PC Mike Upson as well as reports from various groups in the village. Recycling will be on the agenda.
The Parish Meeting may by law discuss all Parish Affairs and pass resolutions about them.
Cycling Course
In response to a suggestion to encourage children to be aware of the dangers in travelling around the village, the Parish Council is offering a free cycling proficiency course in the village to, initially, local children if there is enough support. There are ten spaces on the course. If there is more interest other courses can be arranged. The course will take place over two days on a weekend in June. If you have your own bike it will be tested to see if it is in good working order. If you do not have a bicycle one can be provided. Helmets can also be provided.
Please contact the Clerk, telephone 723142 or call in at St. Francis, Stocks Lane.

Kevin Cornwall is the Director of Global Infrastructure Architecture of Avaya Inc., a company who have grown to specialise in automated answering systems and call centres. His talk entitled 'Broadband and Beyond' is of particular significance to the Southwold area, as broadband will arrive in May. It is simple to install and Kevin demystified the world of broadband by taking us from a basic set-up, through security, to the future and its applications. Eager questioners frequently interrupted him, all keen to know what difference it will make to our Internet experience. We were advised to install a security program combining a firewall, anti-virus, anti-spy-ware and anti-spam. The most important advantage of broadband is speed and the ability to be permanently on-line yet able to receive phone calls. It can also provide instant messaging and access to music, radio, TV and videos anywhere in the world. With dial-up, we are lucky if we get as much as 40 Kbs, yet BT and other providers are already offering greater speeds than a few months ago, and the near future promises 100 Mbs. We can look forward to a future enabling multiple devices in our homes. IP telephones, which work via broadband, are already available. Converting voice into data, they are secure and cannot be bugged. Left only with the AGM and the forthcoming outing to Great Yarmouth Coast Guards, our March speaker rounded up yet another stimulating season for BVCS.

Church Bulletins' Quotes (Part 2)
More quotes from across the "Pond". Taken from actual American church bulletins; or were announced in church services:
The peacemaking meeting scheduled for today has been cancelled due to a conflict.
Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.
Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say "Hell" to someone who doesn't care much about you.
Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.
Miss Charlene Mason sang, "I will not pass this way again." Giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
For those of you who have children and don't know it, we have a nursery downstairs.
Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get!
