Postman Les Reynolds

Remember when we used to have TWO daily deliveries?
In the sixties, not content with just delivering the post, during the summer time Les was also 'Receptionist/ Usher Extraordinaire' at the Southwold Summer Theatre.
Recently (Saturday, 1st April 2006), Les hung up his bicycle clips for good and I hope all in Walberswick, especially those remembering back to those halcyon days, will join in wishing him a long and happy retirement.

Walberswick Common Lands Charity

Would you like to become a Trustee?

At their meeting on Monday 5th June, Walberswick Parish Council will be required to appoint one Nominative Trustee, with effect from Thursday 15th June.
If you would like to be considered, please inform the Clerk of the Parish Council in writing no later than Monday, 15th May. A job description is available from the Clerk (Tel: 723142). You may also wish to contact Barbara Priestman, Chairman of the Trust, for further information (Tel: 723914).
The Council will exclude the public from the meeting during its deliberations on the matter.
The WCLCT manages land and property in order to generate an income that can be distributed to benefit a wide range of individuals and organisations in the village. The Trustees are responsible for making decisions about how this should be done and ensuring that they are carried out effectively and within Charity Commission guidelines.
A range of skills and experience is needed. This particular vacancy will, ideally, be filled by somebody with an understanding of the principles of finance, investment and property management, although an enthusiasm for the work of the Trust is the most important attribute.
Anyone over the age of eighteen may apply.

Stunned by the unexpected, traumatic ending of Il Postino, you could have heard the proverbial pin drop as the closing credits rolled down the screen and here and there someone reached surreptitiously for their hanky.
We shall finish our season with a thriller about black marketeers and murder. Carol Reed's 'The Third Man' is considered by many to be one of the classics of world cinema. Graham Greene wrote the screenplay of his own book and it stars Orson Welles, Trevor Howard, Joseph Cotton and Alida Valli. Shot in 1949, the scene is set in post-war Vienna, a city under the schizophrenic control of Britain, France, Russia and the USA. Holly Martins, a rather naïve writer of pulp westerns, arrives in Vienna to meet up with his old friend Harry Lime who has promised him employment. Upon his arrival, however, he finds Harry's funeral taking place and he sets out to discover the truth behind a mysterious road accident. He meets two of the men who carried away the body, but who was the third man?
Whilst the camera captures sinister images of Vienna, who can forget the ride on the Prater Wheel, the shadow on the wall, the cat in the doorway, or that haunting zither music?
'The Third Man',
Certificate PG, will be preceded by a brief AGM Sunday, 14th May at 7.30 p.m., in the Village Hall.

The parking area on the Common at the end of Church Lane suffered deterioration during the winter, becoming badly pot holed and rutted. Work will be carried out to the area this spring. A removable post will be positioned at the access point to this area at the end of Church Lane. This will enable the Trust to control vehicle access in times of wet weather to prevent future damage.
