Walberswick Horticultural Show
Despite the dry weather, the number of exhibits was up on last year. The children's entries were very varied and, naturally, all prizewinners. Amorelle Hughes won the Iris Blois Cup, for the lady with the highest number of points in vegetables. Jill Whittenbury won the Harvey Memorial Trophy, for a trug of vegetables, and David Webb won The Winyard Cup for men's vegetables. David also won the Victor Ludorum Trophy for the most overall points. Christine Mitchell won the C.C. Gold Cup for culinary entries. All of the cup and trophy winners did so by only a point or two (some after several recounts!), so the competition was very fierce. Next February, Andrew Tokely will be giving a talk about growing and showing vegetables. Andrew has a regular column in The Kitchen Garden magazine and is a prizewinner at many of the local shows. In March, Jill Whittenbury will give a talk about the art of preparing exhibits for the culinary section and, hopefully, someone in April will talk about growing fuchsias. Details will be announced later on in the year. My thanks to all of you who made the effort to exhibit in the show: also to the many people that helped us prepare and clear up after the show, all of the committee, especially our two new members, Sue Green and Jodie Ellis and particularly to Jane Kirkeby, our secretary, for all the hard work she puts in behind the scenes.

Walberswick Golf Association (WGA)
The result of the WGA match at Halesworth on the 12th August was that fifteen complete idiots got thoroughly soaked! Alan Porter won the match with 21 points, finishing with a carefully thought-out birdie from halfway up the ninth fairway; after scuffing his second shot. Mick Davies was 2nd with 20 points and 'Hawkeye' Hunt came in 3rd with 18 points. Andrew Horsbrough was Nearest The Pin with a ferocious 110 yard putt with a nine iron that, had it not actually hit the pin square on and dropped 18 inches from the hole, may well have ended up in Rainbow's car park! Many thanks to all the aforementioned idiots for being there, and thanks to Sophie at the Anchor for the 'après drenching' nibbles. Hopefully we can organise another game when we've all eventually dried out. Early October looks promising. Chas Elliott
